Dr. Smucker in participatory instruction in Haiti

We proudly welcome Dr. Glenn Smucker to the Board of advisors team. A cultural anthropologist, Smucker has focused on the practical applications of anthropology to human problems for the past 40 years. Smucker first lived in Haiti as a child in 1960 and has since developed to be a leading specialist on Haiti.

His expertise are invaluable to the BUC initiatives to grow deep rooted perennial grasses to for land reclamation and to stop soil erosion in Haiti. The 501c3 BUC is achieving success in stabilizing soils on mountain slopes, and landscaping around homes with perennial grasses in Haiti, a country with among the highest levels of soil erosion in the world. Soil erosion contributes towards poverty in Haiti, accentuates mudslides during hurricanes, robs animals of habitat, causes the loss of rich agricultural soils and silts water reservoirs. This grass planting initiative, funded through donations, reverses these challenges.

Smucker’s expertise in Haiti will help navigate and guide the project through the complexities of conducting projects in Haiti, commented Dr. Thomas Cellucci a board member. Cellucci specifically pointed out Smucker’s experiences including his many reports, a book on grassroots organizations in Haiti, having consulted for USAID, the Inter-American Bank, the World Bank, the Haitian Ministries of Environment and Agriculture, and CORE, the philanthropic organization founded by Sean Penn. Smucker has served as the director of the Pan American Development Foundation in Haiti and has been involved in watershed management and agroforestry projects.

Board member Dr. Fanchon Felice Funk described as an honor and great opportunity to serve along with Smucker on alleviating poverty in Haiti. Smucker who is based in Haiti expressed tremendous optimism and the potential for Haiti.

The passionate and dedicated project CEO Dr. Tawainga Katsvairo reaffirmed the program’s motto of an erosion free Haiti, and the quest for the organization for many partners join the most worth and rewarding initiative as described by Katsvairo.
