Protecting Mountain Slopes
In the image above, the damage and loss of life caused by the flooding and mudslides could have been reduced through cost-effective preventative measures and erosion mitigation practices such as the planting of grasses.
Hurricanes are a prevalent natural disaster in Haiti that kill thousands of people due to landslides caused by unstable soils and flooding.
Yet communities have demonstrated that eroded mountain slopes can be stabilized by planting grasses that drastically reduce flooding and mudslides, in addition to the many benefits of vegetation.
Thes above protected soils were barren a mere three months before the planting, but can now withstand hurricanes.
Planting perennial grasses is a solution to reducing mudslides and floods that result in fatalities.
